Children make sense of their world through telling stories -- from a toddler's "Mommy left," to a five-year-old's, "Once there was a knight and he fighted the dragons...." Inspired by educator Vivian Paley, Magic & Mayhem classes are dedicated to supporting children in telling and acting out their own stories.
The class is in two parts. First, zany theatre games help kids explore how to use their voices, faces and bodies to express emotions and characters. We'll pretend to cross a room full of chocolate pudding, to walk on a tightrope a hundred feet above the ground, and to hatch from eggs and grow into dinosaurs. Next, the storytelling workshop in which children draw and dictate their stories. As an ensemble, we will act out each story that a child wants to see come to life.
Toward the end of the session, the group will start to work together to create one large-group story. Children will each choose their own character, and then work together to develop a plot (and write songs and choreograph dances as needed!). We'll devote a class session to using recycled materials to build set pieces and props. Finally, we'll perform for families on our last class period!
Class is designed as drop-off, but if you think your child will need you to be there, let me know and we can work it out.
